🙋‍♂️ Networking for Dummies
3 'Aha' Moments from the Trenches

BUT DID YOU DIE?
No. But I was a bit anxious. Networking has not been a priority for growing my business, but Monday night changed all that. I want to share three quick lessons I learned during my two hours at a networking event for entrepreneurs, business owners, and investors on Labor Day in Minneapolis.

3 “OH MY!” LESSONS FROM A DUMMY
1. Networking Isn’t Scary
“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”
As an introvert, it’s easy to talk myself out of opportunities, especially when they involve large groups. But since I consistently challenge and encourage you to attend networking events, it only felt right to do the same. (gulp)
So I walked my talk, and really glad I did.
I discovered that many other entrepreneurs and business professionals felt just as insecure as I did when stepping into a crowded room. But if we’re passionate and committed to our projects, we need to push through that discomfort and fear and put our best foot forward.
If we don’t go, how will they know?
2. Networking Isn’t Salesy
“Networking is more about farming than it is about hunting. It’s about cultivating relationships.”
One of my fears about attending a networking event was thinking it would be like walking onto a used car lot filled with overzealous salespeople. I was wrong.
People weren’t selling, people were learning.
Learning about each other's dreams and passions, the opportunities and challenges we face, and new ways to grow our businesses and make a bigger impact. The learning was beautifully refreshing.
3. Networking Isn’t Competitive
“My Golden Rule of Networking is simple: Don’t keep score.”
When I walked into that brewery full of movers and shakers on Monday night, I expected it to be a “Game on!” kind of gathering. I was fully prepared for name-dropping and the listing of accomplishments and disruptive ideas.
To my surprise and delight, it was all about connecting and collaborating rather than competing and comparing. What a refreshing change!
I’m already looking forward to the next event and meeting even more amazing people who are building businesses that make a difference. 🌟
