I’m a simple man. I drive a simple car and live in a simple home. It should be no surprise that when it comes to my business plan, it’s … simple.

MY COMPASS ISN’T COMPLICATED

Two words guide me: freedom and contentment. For the past twenty years, I've used a simple concept called the "Freedom Number" to keep my business goals clear and achievable … which leads to freedom and contentment.

My monthly Freedom Number was $4,000 for many years. Why $4,000? Simply put, it covered all my essential expenses — mortgage, bills, travel, food — and left a little extra for fun. I’ve increased my number as I have bigger dreams and goals nowadays.

Freedom Numbers can differ based on individual life goals. For some, an additional $100 per month from a side hustle offers the freedom to indulge in guilt-free activities like joining a gym or going to the movies. For others, earning $10,000 per month provides the freedom not just to cover expenses but also to save for big dreams like purchasing an RV for future road trips.

SHOW ME THE MONEY PLAN

Yesterday, I chatted with a budding entrepreneur who shared his monthly money goal with me. He then proceeded to share his laundry list of tasks to launch his business … it was exhausting; website, newsletter, funnels, social media, payment processing, business cards, networking, etc. It made me almost advise him against it all, thinking it sounded too daunting.

I tried to remind him that although all those elements are important, they shouldn’t distract him from his Freedom Number. That’s the plan to stick to.

If your business model is complicated, my eyes glaze over. I don’t want to hear about how you’re going to make a million dollars, I just want to be clear on your plan to make your next dollar and hit your monthly Freedom Number goal.

Noah Kagan (shown above) also follows the Freedom Number concept and shares why setting one simple monthly income goal is so effective:

“Firstly, it's achievable. My Freedom Number was within reach, and the idea of gaining freedom motivated me endlessly, providing confidence even in uncertain times.

Secondly, it's tangible and urgent. Unlike lofty dreams, like becoming a multimillionaire by a certain age, this number is something you can act on today. It doesn't have to be huge; even a modest amount can kickstart your journey. My early side projects were small, but they honed my skills for bigger ventures later.

Lastly, having a specific goal number focuses your efforts on what truly matters: attracting customers. Many struggle to make their first dollar because they're fixated on making millions. But concentrating on a reachable Freedom Number shifts your mindset. It prompts you to ask: What steps can I take right now to earn money in my business?”
