😱 Facebook Down!

Why It Shouldn't Matter to You

“Put all your eggs in one basket ... the handle's going to break. Then all you've got is scrambled eggs.”

~ Nora Roberts

IT’S ALL GOOD. UNTIL IT ISN’T.

When Facebook and Instagram went down yesterday, panic set in worldwide. But, not in my world. Let me explain …

ONE-DIMENSION WONDER

I know it’s laudable to be a person who goes all-in. But when it comes to your messaging and marketing, it’s best to go all-over-in.

I have friends and colleagues who have built businesses on both Facebook and Instagram. They’re beholden to these platforms because they’ve worked so well in building and expanding their brand. But, what if …

Technology can be glitchy. Yesterday morning proved that once again as billions of people looked at their phone and saw a prompt to log in to their Facebook account. Hmm, weird.

Heck, I tried logging in a few times ‘til I thought “maybe it isn’t me” this time.

I was right. How did I find out? I opened X (formally Twitter) and saw posts stating FB was indeed down. X loves mornings like yesterday. 😈

If Facebook went away, would you be ok? Building your home on someone else’s property is incredibly risky.

Meta seemingly changes its algorithms on a monthly basis which leads to great frustration as users see their reach scaled back more and more. In a sense, you already know what it feels like to have it “go down” each and every day.

DIVERSIFY YOUR ASSETS JUST IN CASE

Don’t spend time publishing and producing on a bunch of platforms for the sake of just doing so. Remember, we’re not about busyness, we’re about business.

Instead, determine which platforms your audience is spending time on and drop a line in the water. If you get a bites, set the hook. If not, pull up anchor and put the boat in a different lake.

It’s your boat, act like the captain.

WHAT SAY YOU?

I believe each person should have a presence and publish consistently on at least three digital platforms. If Facebook goes down, at least you can post on X. If X closes its doors, at least you can publish to LinkedIn. If LinkedIn doesn’t produce any results, at least you can send your email newsletter.

In a perfect world for MY businesses, I’d select: Facebook, Email, YouTube.

What platforms are you currently sharing your story and offering your services on? Which is working best, and which should be put to rest? What platform do you want to start utilizing?

Some platform options to consider:

  • Facebook

  • Newsletter

  • LinkedIn

  • Podcast

  • YouTube

  • Speaking

  • Pinterest

  • Instagram

  • Webinar

  • TikTok

  • Reddit
