🤨 Don't (only) Follow Your Passion

This One Thing Matters Most

CAN YOU SAY THAT???

"Follow your passion" is a classic phrase you often hear when it comes to career advice. It's everywhere in self-help books, graduation speeches (spare me), and from career coaches … but you won’t find it here. Sorry.

In my experience, succeeding in entrepreneurship or your career requires more than just passion. It boils down to one word: Talent.

A DOSE OF BOTH

I remember a pastor receiving criticism for a sermon he preached at a church leadership conference, but I actually agreed with him. The message title was “Talent Matters.” His point was that while passion and good intentions are important when it comes to leadership, they can only go so far. He believed that churches should aim to hire talented individuals with good hearts, rather than just well-meaning people with limited skills. Oh-oh.

His frustration was that senior pastors didn’t have a compelling enough vision and that talented individuals who might otherwise want to serve in ministry looked to the marketplace for purpose and fulfillment.

Sure, passion is crucial for success, but it seems we've emphasized it more than talent and skill when it comes to entrepreneurship and business.

  • I dreamed of being an NFL player, but lacked athleticism.

  • I aspired to become a doctor, but didn't have the intelligence.

  • I wanted to teach high school, but lacked patience.

  • I aimed to run a big company, but lacked perseverance.

  • I even considered being a runway model... well, let's just say that didn't happen.

Success requires both passion and talent, but let's begin with talent.

TRAIN YOUR TALENT
  • What are you great at?

  • How can you get even better?

  • What can you produce that people would pay for?

  • How can your skills help others and improve our world?

It’s time to train and flex your talent muscle.

I believe if you continually refine your skills and use your talents to help others, you'll become even more passionate about achieving your goals. The key is figuring out the most effective ways to improve your skills which will then open doors to new opportunities and victories!
