HOW TO GET THINGS DONE ☑️

There is one tool I use every day that helps me grow my brand and my business. And it’s all because I use it a bit differently than most.

RESPONSIBILITY vs. OPPORTUNITY 📊

If it’s not on the calendar, it ain’t getting done. While that isn’t always the case, I believe that when we prove our intentions by putting them on a calendar, it takes the completion rate to a whole new level. But there’s more to it than just compiling a To-Do list in a different form.

Sure, I have obligations and responsibilities that are strewn throughout my day and week, and they do make it on my calendar. But, if that’s all I saw when opening the calendar app or glancing on the hanging calendar in the kitchen, I would feel heavy laden and vapid.

I look at my calendar, not as just a list of things I need to cross off, but as a palette which I paint upon with opportunities I want to press into and dreams I want to pursue.

SHOW ME YOURS 👀

If we were sharing an Uber right now and I asked you to hand me your phone, the first thing I would check is your calendar to see how you attack your day and week. Would I find it filled with exciting opportunities … or mundane responsibilities? You are in charge of your life, you can begin making changes today.

If you ever happen to be hanging with me, feel free to ask me to show you my calendar. I think you might be surprised at the myriad of ideas, hopes and goals that fill my head and schedule.

I listen to at least one podcast every day, not to fill my time, but to fill my head and heart. I place that opportunity on my calendar and then set a reminder to listen or watch. These kinds of disciplines don’t happen haphazardly … I am on the offense with my calendar and schedule. Just checking off responsibilities time and time again is taking a defensive posture. Stop it.

As a creator and business owner, your calendar should include opportunities such as:

  • Have coffee with someone in your industry who is killing it and pick their brain.

  • Reread your website from a customer’s perspective and determine if your messaging is clear regarding the problem you solve and the solution you have.

  • Email five potential clients asking how you can serve them before the end of the year.

  • Email five past customers and ask how you can improve the customer experience.

  • Block off entire mornings/afternoons to focus on completing one project.

  • Buy a gym membership

  • Go to the gym.

  • Find one networking opportunity each month and commit to attending.

  • Call your mother/father/friend.

  • Watch a business podcast rather than New Girl this week.

  • Read an article on improving your sales instead of a predictable romance novel.

  • Clean your workspace so that your mind can be cleared of distractions.

  • Go to a theater once each month and get lost in wonder.

  • Grab lunch (on your own) at a local eatery and notice your dining experience from beginning to end. What would you do differently to enhance the experience? Apply it to your customer’s journey.

  • Schedule walk breaks each day to get your blood flowing and your mind stimulated.

Take a long, hard look at your calendar today. Be sure it’s balanced with responsibilities you need to take care of, as well as opportunities to grow your business and brand.

You will begin to see results immediately, so put it on your calendar! 🗓

WOULD YOU, COULD YOU? 🙏
